Malachi says God 'hates' divorce, yet the Law of Moses seems to permit it. How can both be true?
This verse hits hard because it confronts a tension we see throughout Scripture: God's perfect will versus His concessions to human weakness.
God's Original Design
From the very beginning, God intended marriage to be a lifelong, unbreakable union. Jesus himself points back to creation, stating, 'From the beginning the Creator made them male and female, and said, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”' (Matthew 19:4-5).
Concession to a Hardened Heart
However, God, in His wisdom and mercy, allowed divorce under the Mosaic Law (Deuteronomy 24:1-4). This wasn't because He liked divorce, but as a way to prevent greater violence and cruelty in a fallen world. Think of it like a doctor prescribing strong medication for a severe illness – it’s not ideal, but it’s the best option to prevent a worse outcome. Jesus explains this concession was 'because your hearts were hard' (Matthew 19:8).
God's Abhorrence Remains
But Malachi’s message is clear: this allowance was never God’s ideal. He hates divorce because it tears apart what He designed to be one, breaking covenant promises and causing deep pain. The permission was a temporary measure for a broken people, not a stamp of approval.
