Ever wondered if marriage has always been meant to be between one man and one woman? Malachi takes us back to the very beginning to show us God's original intention.
The 'One' Creator, The 'One' Union
The prophet Malachi starts with a powerful question: 'Did he not make one?' This isn't just a rhetorical question; it's a reminder of God's foundational act in creation. God, who had an abundance of spirit and power ('the residue of the spirit'), could have created many men and many women, or even multiple wives for one man. Yet, He chose to create one man, Adam, and from him, one woman, Eve.
This wasn't an accident or a limitation of God's power. It was a deliberate design.
- Unity as the Standard: By making them 'one flesh,' God established the principle of indissoluble unity in marriage. This is the blueprint. Jesus Himself points back to this creation account to answer questions about divorce (Matthew 19:4-6).
- Purposeful Design: The choice to create just one pair wasn't arbitrary. It served a crucial purpose: to establish a model for humanity and, as Malachi explains, to seek a 'godly offspring.' A pure, unified union was intended to raise children who would know and honor God.
