This verse doesn't just announce a command; it highlights that the priests themselves are the subject of this specific decree. God is turning His attention directly to them, indicating they are the source of the spiritual corruption and will bear the brunt of His judgment if they don't change.
“And now, O priests, this command is for you. If you will not listen, if you will not take it to heart to give honor to my name, says the LORD of hosts, then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings. Indeed, I have already cursed them, because you do not lay it to heart. Behold, I will rebuke your offspring, and spread dung on your faces, the dung of your offerings, and you shall be taken away with it.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Malachi has just rebuked the people for their careless worship and their disrespect for God's name. Now, the prophet directly addresses the priests, who are the spiritual leaders responsible for mediating between God and the people, to deliver a severe warning and a command for reform concerning their duties and the covenant God made with the tribe of Levi. This shift in focus highlights the priests' critical role and their deep complicity in the spiritual decline that Malachi is exposing.
The book of Malachi pivots sharply here, turning away from the people to confront a specific group directly. Why the sudden shift in focus?
Malachi 2:1 begins with a direct, almost abrupt, 'And now, O priests, this commandment is for you.' This isn't just another message; it's a specific summons to the spiritual leaders of Israel. The commentaries highlight that this verse marks a return to address the priests, identified as a primary source of the spiritual decay within the nation. God is calling them out, not just as part of the crowd, but as those specifically responsible for upholding His covenant and teaching His ways. This emphasizes the unique accountability that comes with spiritual leadership. It's a reminder that God sees the heart and actions of those He has appointed to guide His people.
Is this a new rule, a warning, or a decree of punishment? The meaning of 'commandment' here is key to understanding God's message.
The word 'commandment' in this verse isn't presenting a new regulation to follow, but rather a divine decree or pronouncement that concerns the priests directly. The commentaries suggest it refers to a message of judgment or a specific purpose God has concerning them due to their failures. It’s less about 'here’s what to do next' and more about 'here’s what God has decided because of what you have done.' This decree carries with it the weight of consequence, as the following verses detail. It underscores that God’s word isn’t just instructional; it’s also authoritative and carries the power of His pronouncements, whether for blessing or for judgment.

Beyond rituals, what was the deeper role of these priests? Malachi reveals a vital intellectual and spiritual duty.
One of the most striking insights from the commentaries is the understanding of the priest's role as a 'guardian of knowledge.' Malachi emphasizes that the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth because he is the 'angel' or messenger of the Lord of Hosts. This highlights that the priesthood wasn't solely about performing sacrifices and ceremonies. It was fundamentally about understanding and faithfully communicating God's truth – His Torah. This charge applies even to today, reminding spiritual leaders and all believers of the importance of intellectual engagement with Scripture and the responsibility to share truth accurately and accessibly, rather than letting knowledge become stale or hidden.
