Edom faced devastation, yet their response wasn't repentance, but defiant self-reliance. Have you ever felt that same impulse to rebuild on your own strength after hardship?
The people of Edom, descendants of Esau, had suffered significant destruction. Yet, their response wasn't to humble themselves before God or seek His help. Instead, they declared with pride, 'We are shattered but we will rebuild the ruins!' This is a classic expression of human arrogance and self-sufficiency.
It mirrors the defiance seen in Isaiah 9:9-10, where the people, after destruction, boasted, 'The bricks have fallen, but we will build with hewn stones; the sycamores have been cut down, but we will replace them with cedars.' This attitude ignores God's sovereignty and His role in both judgment and restoration. It's the language of those who believe their own strength and resilience can overcome any setback, without acknowledging the One who ultimately holds all power.
