Jesus isn't just talking about the outcome of a tree's life; he's highlighting the inherent nature behind it. A truly good tree can't produce rotten fruit, and a rotten one can't spontaneously grow good, because the fruit flows directly from what the tree fundamentally is.
“For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus has just finished teaching about judging others, emphasizing the hypocrisy of pointing out small faults in others while ignoring bigger ones in ourselves. He then uses this analogy of trees and fruit to illustrate that true character, whether good or bad, is revealed by its consistent outward expression, not by outward appearances or actions that contradict inner nature. This connects directly to the idea that genuine discipleship will produce genuine "fruit" in a person's life.
Jesus uses a simple, everyday analogy to make a profound point about character. What can the natural world teach us about the spiritual one?
Jesus paints a clear picture here: a tree's nature dictates its fruit. A healthy, vibrant tree naturally produces good, nourishing fruit. Conversely, a diseased or dead tree can only produce rotten or no fruit. This isn't about trying harder; it's about the inherent quality of the tree itself. What a tree is determines what it produces.
Why does Jesus connect trees and fruit to something deeper within us? It's not just about outward appearance, but the source of what we do.
Jesus isn't just talking about plants! He's using this analogy to reveal a deep truth about human nature. The 'fruit' we bear – our actions, our speech, our character – isn't random. It flows directly from our inner being, our 'tree.' A 'good tree' has a good inner disposition, a transformed heart. A 'bad tree' is rooted in something corrupt. What's inside will inevitably come out.

Luke 3:8John the Baptist uses a similar metaphor, urging people to produce fruit in keeping with repentance. This connects Luke 6:43 by showing that outward actions (fruit) are a visible sign of inward change or true nature.
Jeremiah 17:7-8This passage contrasts the blessedness of those who trust in the Lord with the fate of those who turn away. The 'fruit' of trust is flourishing like a tree planted by water, illustrating how a right inner disposition leads to outward flourishing and good results.
Galatians 5:22-23This passage lists the 'fruit of the Spirit,' which are the positive outcomes of a life lived in step with God. It serves as a clear example of 'good fruit' flowing from a transformed inner life, mirroring the principle in Luke 6:43.

- But beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves. 16. From their fruits you shall know them.
