Levi left 'all' to follow Jesus. What was he really giving up, and what did this feast reveal about his new priorities?
When Jesus told Levi to 'Follow me,' it wasn't a casual suggestion. Levi, the tax collector, had a lucrative, albeit unpopular, profession. He sat at the 'receipt of custom,' managing the collection of taxes – a position that afforded him wealth and influence, but also shame.
Leaving that behind meant giving up financial security, social standing (however negative), and a certain lifestyle. The feast Levi hosted, shortly after his calling, wasn't just a thank-you party for Jesus. It was an act of sacrifice and a demonstration of what he was willing to let go of.
By hosting his former colleagues and sharing a meal with Jesus, Levi was publicly symbolizing his departure from his old life. He was sacrificing his lucrative career and perhaps even some of his wealth (a 'great feast' requires resources) to embrace a new path. This act showed that his commitment to Jesus was genuine and that his priorities had fundamentally shifted.
