Why the wilderness, right after such a powerful divine affirmation at the Jordan?
The timing and location are crucial. Jesus’ baptism was His divine inauguration, a moment of profound affirmation. Immediately following this, He is 'led by the Spirit into the wilderness.'
A Necessary Contrast
The wilderness is a place of desolation, emptiness, and vulnerability. It stands in stark contrast to the affirmation at the Jordan. This transition highlights that divine empowerment isn't always about public accolades; it often leads to private trials.
Tested and Proven Humanity
Commentators note that this wilderness journey was where Jesus, as the Son of Man, faced temptation. It was a place to test His humanity, His reliance on God, and His commitment to the Father's will, all before His public ministry began. The Spirit led Him not away from challenge, but it, for the purpose of proving and preparing Him.
