Herod, the ruler who had executed John the Baptist, finally gets his wish to see Jesus. But what he really wanted reveals a lot about his heart.
Herod Antipas, the Tetrarch of Galilee, had a long-standing curiosity about Jesus. He'd heard many stories and, according to Luke, 'long cherished a desire to see him.' When Jesus was sent to his jurisdiction, Herod was 'very glad.'
- A Glimpse of the Miraculous: Herod hoped to see Jesus perform a miracle, something sensational to satisfy his own amusement. He wasn't seeking truth or repentance, but a show. This mirrors the superficial interest many have in spiritual matters today – wanting the 'wow' factor without genuine engagement.
- Silence in the Face of Power: Despite Herod's questioning and expectations, Jesus remained silent. This silence was a powerful statement, refusing to engage in Herod's trivial pursuit or to validate his corrupt authority. It underscores Jesus's commitment to His divine mission, which was far beyond the games of earthly rulers.
