When God bursts onto the scene with world-changing news, who does He tell first? It wasn't kings or religious leaders, but a group often looked down upon.
Think about the shepherds in Luke 2:8. The angel's announcement of Jesus' birth wasn't made to the wealthy or the powerful, but to ordinary shepherds watching their sheep.
A Lowly Occupation
In Jewish society at the time, shepherds weren't highly regarded. Some texts even suggest they weren't trusted enough to be reliable witnesses in court. Their work kept them away from the community, often outdoors day and night, dealing with the raw realities of life and nature.
God's Special Choice
But God chose them. Why? Because He often chooses the humble to reveal His glory. This wasn't just random; these shepherds were likely tending sheep meant for Temple sacrifice, connecting their daily work to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus. They were also described as devout, potentially “waiting for the consolation of Israel.” God’s message was for them, and through them, for everyone.
