What's striking here isn't just that the disciples put their cloaks on the colt, but that they cast their own garments upon it. This wasn't a planned procession; it was an spontaneous act of deep reverence, like offering the very best they had to honor Jesus as King. It shows their immediate, heartfelt response to His divine calling, turning ordinary clothes into a royal carpet for their Lord.
And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus has just sent two disciples to retrieve a colt, with instructions on how to respond if questioned. They successfully bring the colt back, and now the disciples, along with the growing crowd, are preparing Jesus to ride it into Jerusalem. This act is intentionally orchestrated to fulfill prophecy and signal Jesus' kingship, a stark contrast to earthly rulers.
Why would a king be seated on a borrowed colt with cloaks as a saddle? This wasn't about earthly power, but a divine statement.
When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the disciples didn't find royal robes or a golden chariot. Instead, they used their own garments. This act was deeply symbolic:
Jesus didn't own the colt he rode. So why was this specific, untamed animal so crucial to His royal entry?
The choice of a colt – one that had never been ridden – was deliberate and spoke volumes:

gillLuke 19:35: "And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon."
And they brought him to Jesus,.... That is, the colt: and they cast their garments upon the colt; that is, the disciples, who brought him to Jesus; the Persic version here, as in Matthew 21:7 renders it very wrongly, "Jesus put his own garment on its back, and sat on it"; it follows, and they set Jesus thereon; in order to ride upon him, as he did to Jerusalem.
What's striking here isn't just that the disciples put their cloaks on the colt, but that they cast their own garments upon it.
