The disciples heard Jesus' words and were floored. If wealth makes it so hard, who can be saved? Jesus' answer pivots from human effort to divine power.
The disciples' reaction of amazement ('Who then can be saved?') is crucial. It reveals their understanding that entering God's kingdom requires something they couldn't achieve on their own, especially given the overwhelming obstacle of riches.
The Impossibility with Men
Jesus affirms their realization: "With men this is impossible." He isn't minimizing the difficulty; he's stating a profound truth about human inability. We cannot save ourselves, nor can we overcome the spiritual barriers that our own desires, like the love of wealth, create.
The All-Sufficiency of God
But Jesus doesn't leave them in despair. He immediately follows with, 'but with God all things are possible.' This is the glorious counterpoint. Salvation isn't about a rich person's ability to detach from their wealth, or anyone's ability to earn their way in. It's entirely dependent on God's sovereign power to draw, transform, and save, regardless of external circumstances or internal struggles.
