Have you ever tried to shield someone from an 'inconvenience,' only to find you were actually blocking something good?
The disciples did just that, thinking they were protecting Jesus' time and energy.
A Lesson in Misplaced Priorities
When people brought their little children to Jesus, the disciples stepped in. Their reaction? "They rebuked them." They saw these children, perhaps viewed as unimportant or a distraction, and thought it was their job to keep them away from the Master.
Why the Rebuke?
- Protecting Jesus' Time: The disciples likely felt Jesus had more pressing matters, like teaching the crowds or dealing with religious leaders. Infants seemed trivial in comparison.
- Social Norms: In that culture, infants weren't always seen as significant. The disciples' actions reflected a common societal view, not necessarily a deep theological one.
- Misunderstanding Jesus' Mission: They didn't yet grasp that Jesus' mission was precisely to embrace the overlooked, the vulnerable, and the seemingly insignificant.
