The incredible twist here is that the Master doesn't just reward His awake servants; He reverses roles entirely. Instead of them serving Him, He girds Himself like a servant to serve them at the table, elevating them to a place of honor far beyond their station.
Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants!
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus is teaching about the importance of constant readiness for his return, using parables about watchful servants and a thief in the night. This teaching follows a man's interruption demanding Jesus settle an inheritance dispute, highlighting the earthly-mindedness Jesus is contrasting with spiritual alertness. The verses immediately after this describe the responsibility that comes with knowing the master's will, emphasizing that faithfulness is measured by deeds, not just awareness.
Imagine your boss showing up unexpectedly and instead of checking your work, they actually roll up their sleeves and serve you. That’s the kind of radical reversal Jesus is talking about here. What does it truly mean to be 'found watching'?
Jesus calls His followers 'blessed' – deeply favored and happy – when they are 'watching' at His return. This isn't just about staying awake; it's about a readiness of heart and spirit.
A State of Alertness
Think of it like this:
The master in the parable isn't looking for idle hands, but for attentive hearts. He rewards the diligence and faithfulness of those who are prepared.
Jesus paints a picture so extraordinary it flips our expectations upside down. He promises that when He returns for His faithful servants, He won't just acknowledge them – He will serve . What does this astounding reversal reveal about God’s love?

The most striking part of this verse is the master’s action: 'he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them.' This is a radical inversion of the typical master-servant dynamic.
A Glimpse of Divine Love
This isn't just a reward; it’s a profound expression of Christ's love and His desire to share His glory with those who have faithfully followed Him.
