Jesus isn't just telling his followers to be ready; he's calling them to a specific kind of readiness rooted in ancient practice. "Girding the loins" meant tucking in flowing robes to be able to move and work efficiently, symbolizing that they should shed worldly entanglements and be actively engaged in spiritual service, not passively waiting. Their "lamps burning" further emphasizes this, pointing to a preparedness that involves a vibrant, ongoing expression of their faith, shining brightly in the world.
“Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus is teaching his disciples about the dangers of greed and the importance of living in readiness for his return, which he likens to a master coming home from a wedding feast. This call to vigilance immediately follows his parable of the faithful and foolish servants, emphasizing that no one knows the hour their Lord will appear. The imagery of being dressed for action and having lamps lit paints a vivid picture of servants actively waiting to serve their master the moment he arrives, no matter the hour.

In the East, long, flowing robes were common. To move quickly, work efficiently, or even run, one had to 'gird up their loins.' This meant tucking the loose fabric into a belt or sash, making the person prepared for immediate action.
Jesus is taking this everyday reality and applying it spiritually. He's not just talking about physical preparation; He's calling us to shed anything that would hinder us from serving Him or from being ready when He returns. It’s about being alert, unencumbered, and actively engaged in His service.
Why lamps? In a world without electric lights, a burning lamp wasn't just for convenience—it was essential for seeing and being seen, especially in the darkness.
Jesus calls His followers to keep their 'lamps burning.' This imagery points to several crucial aspects of our faith:
