When you think about satisfying yourself, what comes to mind? This rich man’s answer might surprise you, and it should make us question our own priorities.
Jesus tells the parable of a wealthy man who has a bumper crop. His barns are overflowing! His immediate thought? 'Great! I've got enough stuff for decades. Time to kick back, eat, drink, and party!'
A Misplaced Promise
But notice who he's talking to: 'Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years...' He's addressing his own soul, promising it rest and pleasure based on his material wealth.
This is where the profound foolishness lies. What nourishes a soul? Is it food, drink, and parties? The ancient commentators rightly pointed out the absurdity: 'Had thy soul been a sty, what else couldst thou have promised to it?' The soul needs spiritual food, not just physical comforts. This man mistakes earthly possessions for eternal sustenance.
