Jesus offers one specific sign that will be given – the sign of Jonah. What does this ancient prophet have to do with Jesus’ mission?
The 'sign of Jonah' points to a powerful, yet challenging, reality. Jonah's story (found in the Old Testament book bearing his name) is one of disobedience, a miraculous rescue from the sea, and a preaching mission to a foreign, wicked city (Nineveh) that resulted in repentance. For Jesus' generation, the 'sign of Jonah' encompasses His own death, burial, and resurrection. Just as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for three days and nights, Jesus would be in the heart of the earth for three days. This event would be the ultimate, undeniable sign of His authority and the power of God, not for the curious, but for those who would truly repent and believe.
