and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Mary has just traveled to visit her relative Elizabeth, who is miraculously pregnant in her old age. As soon as Mary greets her, Elizabeth's unborn baby leaps in her womb, and the Holy Spirit fills Elizabeth. In this divinely inspired moment, Elizabeth exclaims to Mary how blessed she is, not just among women, but especially because of the child she is carrying.
Why did Elizabeth’s words feel so powerful, and why did she speak with such intensity?
Elizabeth doesn't just offer a nice compliment; she's overflowing with the Holy Spirit. The text says she was "filled with the Holy Ghost" (Luke 1:41). This isn't just a feeling; it's a divine empowerment. Her declaration of Mary's blessedness isn't just her personal opinion – it's prophecy, echoing God's own perspective.
This is a key moment where the Spirit confirms the miraculous events unfolding. The baby leaped in Elizabeth's womb at Mary's greeting, a sign of recognition. Elizabeth's response, in turn, is a prophetic declaration, validating Mary's unique role and the divine significance of her pregnancy. The 'loud voice' signifies the immense spiritual weight and public declaration of this prophetic moment.
Elizabeth calls Mary 'blessed' and then immediately blesses the baby she carries. What's the connection?
Elizabeth’s declaration, 'Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!' isn't just two separate statements. The second part explains the reason for the first. Mary is blessed because of the child she carries.
This highlights a profound truth: Mary's ultimate blessedness comes from her unique relationship to Jesus. While her faith and her role as mother are honorable, the true source of blessing is the 'fruit of her womb' – Jesus himself. This is a reminder that all true blessing flows from Christ. Elizabeth, enlightened by the Spirit, recognizes Jesus not just as a baby, but as 'Lord' (Luke 1:43), the divine Son.
