Leviticus 6:16-18

What does Leviticus 6:16-18 mean?

What's easy to miss here is the specific location where the priests were to eat this portion: "in the court of the tent of meeting." This wasn't just a casual meal; it was a sacred act, emphasizing that even the priests' sustenance was tied directly to God's presence and service in the holy space. It also means the remainder of the offering was to be eaten unleavened, underscoring its holiness and setting it apart from ordinary food.

And the rest of it Aaron and his sons shall eat. It shall be eaten unleavened in a holy place. In the court of the tent of meeting they shall eat it. It shall not be baked with leaven. I have given it as their portion of my food offerings. It is a thing most holy, like the sin offering and the guilt offering. Every male among the children of Aaron may eat of it, as decreed forever throughout your generations, from the LORD’s food offerings. Whatever touches them shall become holy.”

English Standard Version (ESV)

What Leviticus 6:16-18 means

This passage explains the priestly rights to a portion of the grain offering, specifying that the remaining, unburnt part is for Aaron and his sons to eat. They must consume it in a designated "holy place" within the Tabernacle's courtyard, and it must be eaten unleavened, emphasizing its sacred nature and the priests' sacred duty. This rule highlights that what remains of God's offerings becomes sustenance for His servants, requiring them to maintain holiness in its consumption.

Eating in a Holy Place

Why did the priests have to eat God's provision in a specific, holy location?

This verse highlights that even the leftovers of certain offerings were designated as 'most holy.' This wasn't just discarded food; it was still sacred.

A Taste of God's Presence

The instruction that Aaron and his sons were to eat these portions "in a holy place" and "in the court of the tent of meeting" emphasizes that God's provision for His servants was intimately connected to His presence.

Holiness Matters: Eating these sacred portions in the designated holy area was a constant reminder that everything associated with God's service was set apart and required reverence.
Exclusive Access: This wasn't a casual meal. It was a privilege reserved for those actively serving in the Tabernacle, underscoring the special role of the priesthood.

Unleavened Eating: A Symbol of Purity

What's the big deal about eating without leaven in this context?

The command to eat the priestly portions "unleavened" points to a crucial spiritual principle.

Purity in Provision

Leaven, in the Old Testament, often symbolized corruption or sin. By requiring the priests to eat unleavened, they were to partake of their sacred portion in a state of purity and sincerity.
