The oil for the lamp wasn't just any oil; it had to be "pure oil from beaten olives." This means it was the very first, highest quality oil extracted by pounding the olives, not by grinding, emphasizing that even the light in God's presence required their very best.
“Command the people of Israel to bring you pure oil from beaten olives for the lamp, that a light may be kept burning regularly. Outside the veil of the testimony, in the tent of meeting, Aaron shall arrange it from evening to morning before the LORD regularly. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations. He shall arrange the lamps on the lampstand of pure gold before the LORD regularly.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This command regarding pure olive oil for the lamp comes after instructions about the structure and furnishings of the Tabernacle, particularly the lampstand. It reiterates a previous directive from Exodus, emphasizing the need for a continuous, steady light within the sacred tent. This ongoing light signified God's perpetual presence and guidance for Israel as they journeyed.
Why did God specify 'pure oil from beaten olives' for the lamp in the tabernacle? It wasn't just about the best quality; it was about what that oil represented.
The Purity of God's Provision
The oil for the tabernacle lamp had to be pure, made from olives that were beaten, not crushed in a mill. This method produced the finest, clearest oil.
The lamp in the tabernacle wasn't meant to flicker on and off. What does its 'continual burning' signify for us?
God's Unfailing Presence
The instruction for the light to burn "regularly" or "continually" points to something profound about God's faithfulness.
