Leviticus 23:15-21

What does Leviticus 23:15-21 mean?

The verse emphasizes that the counting of weeks begins the day after the wave offering. This isn't just about marking time; it means the act of offering the firstfruits officially inaugurates a period of anticipation, a sacred countdown to a new harvest celebration. This deliberate counting highlights that God's provision isn't instantaneous but unfolds, requiring patient expectation and gratitude.

“You shall count seven full weeks from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering. You shall count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath. Then you shall present a grain offering of new grain to the LORD. You shall bring from your dwelling places two loaves of bread to be waved, made of two tenths of an ephah. They shall be of fine flour, and they shall be baked with leaven, as firstfruits to the LORD. And you shall present with the bread seven lambs a year old without blemish, and one bull from the herd and two rams. They shall be a burnt offering to the LORD, with their grain offering and their drink offerings, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the LORD. And you shall offer one male goat for a sin offering, and two male lambs a year old as a sacrifice of peace offerings. And the priest shall wave them with the bread of the firstfruits as a wave offering before the LORD, with the two lambs. They shall be holy to the LORD for the priest. And you shall make a proclamation on the same day. You shall hold a holy convocation. You shall not do any ordinary work. It is a statute forever in all your dwelling places throughout your generations.

What Leviticus 23:15-21 means

This passage marks the beginning of a crucial counting period, immediately following the Passover and the offering of the first barley harvest's wave sheaf. For seven full weeks, the Israelites were to meticulously count the days, leading up to a significant new festival. This commanded period of counting directly connects the barley harvest's firstfruits to the subsequent wheat harvest festival, emphasizing a continuous cycle of gratitude and dependence on God's provision.

The Starting Line: Beyond the Sabbath

Ever feel like you're counting down to something big? In ancient Israel, a specific countdown began not on the main Sabbath, but the day after.

Leviticus 23:15 instructs Israel to begin counting seven weeks "from the morrow after the Sabbath." This isn't just any Sabbath; it specifically refers to the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread (which was a Sabbath day of rest).

This sets the stage for the Feast of Weeks, later known as Pentecost. The 'morrow after the Sabbath' points to the 16th day of Nisan. From this day, they were to count seven full weeks. This careful counting highlights the deliberate nature of God's appointed times and the anticipation they built.

Seven Weeks: A Harvest of Weeks

Why count seven full weeks? This wasn't just about marking time; it was a journey towards a specific, holy celebration.

The phrase 'seven sabbaths shall be complete' (or seven weeks) is crucial. It emphasizes the full duration of forty-nine days. The 50th day, following these complete weeks, was the Feast of Weeks (Pentecost).

This period connected the barley harvest (marked by the first sheaf) to the wheat harvest (celebrated at Pentecost). It was a time of transition and growing anticipation, where Israel moved from the initial offerings to a fuller celebration of God's provision. The completion of each week was a step closer to a significant spiritual and agricultural milestone.
