Leviticus 21:10-15

What does Leviticus 21:10-15 mean?

This verse doesn't just forbid the high priest from mourning like others; it highlights his unique, constant consecration. The commands "shall not let the hair of his head hang loose nor tear his clothes" point to him being perpetually set apart, never to publicly express grief in ways that could disrupt his sacred, ongoing role as an intermediary.

“The priest who is chief among his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil is poured and who has been consecrated to wear the garments, shall not let the hair of his head hang loose nor tear his clothes. He shall not go in to any dead bodies nor make himself unclean, even for his father or for his mother. He shall not go out of the sanctuary, lest he profane the sanctuary of his God, for the consecration of the anointing oil of his God is on him: I am the LORD. And he shall take a wife in her virginity. A widow, or a divorced woman, or a woman who has been defiled, or a prostitute, these he shall not marry. But he shall take as his wife a virgin of his own people, that he may not profane his offspring among his people, for I am the LORD who sanctifies him.”

English Standard Version (ESV)

What Leviticus 21:10-15 means

This passage lays out specific, stringent rules for the high priest, emphasizing his unique and elevated status among his brothers and the people. Unlike common priests, who could mourn for close family members, the high priest was forbidden from showing public signs of grief like disheveling his hair or tearing his clothes, even for his parents, because his continuous service and ceremonial cleanness were paramount. This restriction underscored his role as an unblemished intercessor, a symbolic representation of God's presence, and meant his consecration and purity were held to the absolute highest standard.

Anointed and Adorned for Service

What made the high priest so different from other priests? It wasn't just a title; it was a profound, visible set-apartness.

The high priest's consecration was marked by two powerful symbols:

The Anointing Oil

Unlike ordinary priests who might have had oil sprinkled on them or mixed with blood, the high priest had the anointing oil poured directly on his head. This wasn't a small amount; it was like a crown, signifying a unique and intimate appointment by God.

The Sacred Garments

He was 'consecrated to put on the garments.' This refers to the special, elaborate priestly attire. Moses himself robed Aaron and his sons in these garments as part of the consecration. Wearing these clothes wasn't optional; it was integral to his role and his set-apart status for ministry.

Unwavering Focus in Mourning

When disaster strikes, our natural instinct is to grieve openly. But for the high priest, even in deep sorrow, a different response was required.

The high priest was forbidden from two outward expressions of grief: letting his hair hang loose and tearing his clothes. These were common signs of mourning among the people.
