Why did childbirth make a woman ceremonially unclean? It wasn't about physical dirt.
The laws in Leviticus often seem strange to us today. This passage in Leviticus 12 is a perfect example. When a woman gave birth, she was considered ceremonially unclean for a period, just like during her menstrual cycle.
But this wasn't about hygiene or any literal 'filth.' The scholars point out that this was a symbolic representation. It pointed to a deeper truth: the fall of humanity. Every birth, even the most joyous occasion, carried a sign of the universal sin that entered the world through conception and birth. It was a constant, visible reminder to Israel that life itself, in its very beginnings, was touched by the need for redemption and a return to God's holiness.
