The gravest part of Nadab and Abihu's sin wasn't just using the wrong fire, but doing something God explicitly hadn't commanded them to do. This highlights that God's commands aren't just rules to follow, but invitations to participate in His way of doing things, and stepping outside of that has severe consequences.
Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it and laid incense on it and offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, which he had not commanded them. And fire came out from before the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD. Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the LORD has said: ‘Among those who are near me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.’” And Aaron held his peace.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Immediately after the grand dedication of the Tabernacle and the altar, when God’s own fire descended to show His acceptance, Aaron's two eldest sons, Nadab and Abihu, stepped forward with censers. They offered incense with fire that was not from the altar, an act God had not commanded, immediately preceding a stark demonstration of divine judgment and profound instruction on holiness.
Nadab and Abihu offered incense, a sacred duty. But the fire they used was 'strange.' What does this mean for how we approach God today?
The core of Nadab and Abihu's sin was offering 'strange fire' – fire not commanded by God. This wasn't just a procedural error; it was a fundamental misunderstanding of worship.
Worship is God's Idea
Consequences of Disobedience
Nadab and Abihu were sons of Aaron, priests chosen by God. They were even invited to be near God on Mount Sinai. Yet, they perished. What does their fate teach us about drawing near to the Holy One?
The tragedy of Nadab and Abihu is heightened by their privileged position. They were not outsiders stumbling in ignorance; they were insiders, familiar with God's presence and commands.
