This wasn't just a BBQ for God! The 'burnt offering' had a deep theological meaning that set the tone for all other sacrifices.
The term 'burnt offering' comes from a Hebrew word that means 'to ascend' or 'to go up.' This is because the entire animal (except the skin) was consumed by fire on the altar, sending smoke heavenward.
A Wholehearted Devotion
- Unlike other sacrifices where parts were eaten by priests or the offerer, the burnt offering was completely given to God. This symbolized the complete self-dedication of the offerer – their whole being, body and soul, offered to God.
- It also pointed to the immense cost of sin and the completeness of God's wrath required for atonement, a wrath ultimately borne by Christ.
A Sweet Aroma to the LORD
This complete consumption produced a 'sweet savor' to the Lord. It wasn't about pleasing God's senses, but about the perfect satisfaction of His justice and holiness through the complete devotion represented.
