Have you ever given something away that you weren't sure you wanted to part with? Or maybe you've given a gift that was just 'good enough'? God's instructions for sacrifices were different.
In Leviticus 1:10, we see that God's people were to bring their burnt offerings from the 'flocks' – sheep or goats – and they had to be:
Male
Without blemish (perfect)
This wasn't about a flaw in the animal's appearance; it meant a complete lack of any defect. Why such strictness? The scholars point out that these sacrifices were meant to be a picture of Jesus Christ. Just as the animal had to be perfect, Jesus, God's perfect Son, was the ultimate, spotless sacrifice for our sins. It also taught Israel that God deserved their very best, not leftovers or flawed offerings. True worship means giving God our highest and best.
