The verse calls for pouring out one's heart "like water," emphasizing a complete and unreserved outpouring, not just verbal complaints but deep, fluid emotional expression to God. This intense, constant prayer is urgent, even continuing "in the beginning of the watches," highlighting that there is no downtime for seeking God when facing such profound loss.
“Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the night watches! Pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord! Lift your hands to him for the lives of your children, who faint for hunger at the head of every street.” Look, O LORD, and see! With whom have you dealt thus? Should women eat the fruit of their womb, the children of their tender care? Should priest and prophet be killed in the sanctuary of the Lord?
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage bursts forth amidst the raw devastation of Jerusalem's fall. Following descriptions of the city's ruin and the deep sorrow of its people, the prophet, personifying Zion, calls for desperate, unceasing prayer. The focus shifts to the most vulnerable—starving children visible on every corner—underscoring the utter collapse of society and the urgent need for divine intervention.
The darkest hours often feel the most overwhelming. But what if God intends for us to bring our deepest pain into those very moments?
The prophet calls for prayer not just at any time, but specifically "in the night, at the beginning of the watches." This isn't just a suggestion; it's an urgent command to face the deepest despair.
Praying Through the Night
The night was divided into watches, and the instruction is to cry out at the beginning of these watches, implying a continuous, sustained prayer throughout the night. This shows God isn't asking for a casual, quick prayer, but a persistent, heart-wrenching cry.
From Sleep to Supplication
This command to "arise" is powerful. It means shaking off the natural desire for rest and comfort, pushing past numbness or despair, and actively turning to God. It's a call to spiritual wakefulness when the world is asleep, and the pain is most keenly felt.
We're told to pour out our hearts 'like water.' What does that raw, uninhibited expression look like in prayer?
The metaphor 'pour out your heart like water' is incredibly vivid. It speaks of a complete lack of restraint and a total outpouring of emotion and need.
Full Immersion in Prayer
Water flows freely, filling every space. This suggests an honest, unreserved prayer. It's not about curated words or polite requests, but about letting every feeling—sorrow, fear, desperation—flow out to God.

Tears as a Language
This imagery often goes hand-in-hand with tears. The "water" can represent the floods of sorrow that accompany such profound suffering. Pouring out one's heart like water is acknowledging the depth of the pain and presenting it all, unfiltered, to the One who sees and understands.
In the midst of personal agony, the call to prayer expands to include the intense suffering of the most helpless.
The verse culminates with a specific plea: "Lift up your hands to him for the lives of your children, who faint for hunger at the head of every street."
A Parent's Anguish
This is the heart-wrenching reality of a community in crisis. The suffering isn't abstract; it's the tangible, desperate hunger of innocent children, visible to all. The call to prayer is intensely personal and parental.
Compassion in Crisis
Even in their own desperate state, the people are called to intercede for their children. This highlights a profound theological truth: our suffering does not negate our responsibility to care for and pray for the vulnerable. It’s a call to extend compassion even when we feel we have nothing left to give.
