When disaster strikes, it's easy to feel blindsided. But this verse reveals a deeper truth: what happened was no accident.
Jeremiah, writing in the ruins of Jerusalem, confronts the devastating reality. He doesn't blame random chance or solely the enemy's might. Instead, he points to the LORD.
A Deliberate Act
"The LORD has done what he purposed; he has carried out his word." This isn't about an impulsive God, but one whose plans are deliberate and executed. The destruction wasn't a surprise to God; it was part of His foreknown and determined will. This understanding is crucial – it shifts the focus from uncontrollable chaos to divine sovereignty.
The Word of Command
And this purpose wasn't hidden. It was expressed in His "word, which he commanded long ago." The prophets had warned Jerusalem, and the Law itself laid out the consequences for disobedience (like in Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28). God's actions, though severe, were not arbitrary. They were the outworking of His stated commands and covenant faithfulness, even in judgment.
