Abimelech doesn't just ask the Shechemite leaders a question; he plants a deliberate, false rumor that Gideon's seventy sons are vying for power. He's not presenting a real choice, but rather an insidious "what if" designed to make them fear the chaos of seventy rulers, all to pave the way for his own singular ambition.
“Say in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you, that all seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.” And his mother’s relatives spoke all these words on his behalf in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Abimelech, Gideon's son from a Shechemite concubine, manipulates the leaders of Shechem by questioning whether they'd prefer rule by his numerous (and likely quarreling) half-brothers or a single ruler. He then appeals to their kinship, reminding them that he is one of their own, hoping to sway them towards making him king. This cunning proposal is the first step in his violent bid for power, directly following his father Gideon's refusal of kingship and setting the stage for a bloody family feud.
How does Abimelech try to twist the truth to get what he wants? It’s a masterclass in sowing discord.
Abimelech doesn't appeal to reason or justice; he plays on fear and division. He presents a false choice:
He’s not asking what’s right; he’s asking what seems better to them in the moment, using a carefully crafted, manipulative argument. It’s a strategy designed to bypass any true consideration of God’s will or Gideon’s legacy.
Abimelech drops a personal appeal. What's the significance of him calling himself 'your bone and your flesh'?
Beyond the manipulative choice, Abimelech leans on his family ties. He reminds the leaders of Shechem, 'Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.'
This wasn't just a statement of fact; it was a calculated appeal to:

Gideon famously refused kingship. How does Abimelech's actions cast a shadow over his father's decision?
Abimelech's entire pitch is built on subverting Gideon's integrity. Gideon, after delivering Israel, was offered kingship and explicitly refused it, saying, 'I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you. The LORD will rule over you' (Judges 8:23).
Abimelech's strategy here is particularly insidious because he:

This passage mirrors Abimelech's manipulation by showing the Israelites demanding a king, setting up a similar desire for centralized rule over potentially chaotic plural leadership.
Genesis 29:14The phrase 'bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh' is used here by Jacob to describe his relationship with Rachel, highlighting Abimelech's appeal to kinship and shared identity to gain support.
2 Samuel 15:6Absalom, like Abimelech, uses similar rhetoric and plays on his relationship to the king ('your bone and your flesh') to stir up popular support and undermine existing authority.
1 Kings 12:16When the people of Israel reject Rehoboam, they echo the sentiment of choosing self-rule by declaring 'What portion have we in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse!' This reflects a similar tension between centralized power and regional identity as seen in Judges 9.
Proverbs 28:2This proverb speaks to the instability caused by a multitude of rulers, providing a wise commentary on the very dilemma Abimelech presents to the people of Shechem.
