Judges 6:37-40

What does Judges 6:37-40 mean?

Gideon doesn't just ask for a sign; he sets up a precise, almost scientific experiment by specifying that the dew should be only on the fleece, leaving the surrounding ground dry. This highlights his need for undeniable proof that God’s power could distinguish and act upon a specific detail within a larger, natural setting.

behold, I am laying a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece alone, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said.” And it was so. When he rose early next morning and squeezed the fleece, he wrung enough dew from the fleece to fill a bowl with water. Then Gideon said to God, “Let not your anger burn against me; let me speak just once more. Please let me test just once more with the fleece. Please let it be dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground let there be dew.” And God did so that night; and it was dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground there was dew.

What Judges 6:37-40 means

Fresh from a terrifying encounter with an angel and the weight of leading a nation against a brutal enemy, Gideon is still grappling with doubt and seeks a concrete sign from God. He lays out a fleece of wool on the threshing floor, asking God to saturate the fleece with dew while leaving the surrounding ground dry, and then to reverse the conditions. This is Gideon's way of wrestling with the divine assurance that God will use him to save Israel from the Midianites, who are currently oppressing them and have gathered for battle.

Dew as a Sign of God's Favor

Why would Gideon ask for dew on a fleece? It seems like a strange request. Let's uncover what this natural phenomenon meant in ancient times and for Gideon's faith.

Gideon's request for dew to fall only on his fleece, leaving the ground dry, is fascinating. In the ancient world, especially in the dry climate of Palestine, dew was a precious gift.

A Sign of Blessing

Dew was associated with God's blessing and favor. Think of Hosea 14:5: "I will be like the dew to Israel; he shall blossom like the lily." It represented a refreshing, life-giving presence from heaven.

The Unique Property of Wool

Scholars note that wool, particularly a sheepskin, has a unique ability to attract and retain moisture. Even on a dry night, a fleece could become damp from the air, while the surrounding ground might remain dry. This natural occurrence could have suggested the sign to Gideon, but he's asking God to control it.

Gideon's Specific Request

Gideon isn't just asking for dew; he's asking for a specific, unnatural manifestation. If the dew falls only on the fleece and leaves the ground untouched, it points to a divine intervention that is selective and purposeful. This highlights Gideon's struggle to fully trust God's earlier promise.
