Ever feel like your hard work is undone by forces beyond your control? Israel knew this frustration all too well.
The book of Judges paints a stark picture of cause and effect. When Israel turned away from God, their prosperity became a target.
A Pattern of Plunder
Verse 3 shows a recurring cycle: the Israelites invest their energy and resources into planting their crops, only for enemies – the Midianites, Amalekites, and other eastern tribes – to sweep in and take it all.
Why This Cycle?
This wasn't random bad luck. The text links these invasions directly to Israel's disobedience. As one commentary puts it, God 'delivered them into the hand of Midian' because they 'did evil in the sight of the LORD.' Their prosperity, instead of being a blessing from God, became a temptation for plunder when they weren't living in faithfulness.
