Judges 3:7-9

What does Judges 3:7-9 mean?

This verse highlights that "serving the Baals and the Asheroth" wasn't just about worshipping wooden trees, but likely involved carved images of the goddess Asherah, often set up alongside altars to Baal. What's truly striking is how quickly they "forgot the LORD their God," indicating that this abandonment of Him wasn't just a lapse, but a profound act of forgetting who He was and what He had done for them.

And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. They forgot the LORD their God and served the Baals and the Asheroth. Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia. And the people of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years. But when the people of Israel cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for the people of Israel, who saved them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.

What Judges 3:7-9 means

The book of Judges is chronicling the Israelites' cycle of disobedience, oppression, and deliverance after Joshua's death. This verse marks the beginning of that cycle, as the people turn from God, forgetting His faithfulness and their covenant, to worship the local deities, the Baals and Asherahs (often represented by wooden images or found in sacred groves). This departure from God directly sets the stage for the subsequent oppression by foreign nations described in the following verses.

The Allure of Assimilation

Have you ever felt the pull to fit in, even when it meant downplaying what you believe? The Israelites faced a similar struggle.

God had delivered Israel from slavery and brought them into a promised land, but they didn't fully drive out the Canaanite nations.

The Problem of Proximity

Instead of separating themselves, they began to 'dwell among' these people. This wasn't just living side-by-side; it led to intermarriage and deep cultural exchange. The line between Israelite identity and Canaanite culture blurred, making it easier to adopt their ways.

Gradual Drift

This verse highlights a crucial spiritual principle: prolonged, comfortable coexistence with worldliness leads to spiritual compromise. It's not usually a sudden fall, but a gradual drift away from God, as their actions show. They 'did evil in the sight of the LORD' by forgetting Him.

The 'Baals' and 'Asheroth' We Serve

What idols are subtly creeping into your heart, disguised as good things?

The verse states Israel 'served the Baals and the Asheroth.' These weren't just ancient foreign gods; they represented powerful forces that competed for Israel's ultimate allegiance.

The Fertility Cults

'Baal' was a general term for a male deity, often associated with storm and fertility. 'Asheroth' (often translated as 'groves' but more accurately referring to images or sacred poles of Asherah, a prominent goddess) were linked to fertility and often depicted as wooden images.
