Judges 2:20-23

What does Judges 2:20-23 mean?

What stands out here is that God's anger isn't just a reaction; it's directly tied to a broken "covenant," a sacred promise-and-obligation agreement. He explicitly states Israel has disregarded the very commands He gave their fathers, highlighting that disobedience isn't just a minor slip-up but a betrayal of their foundational relationship with Him.

So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he said, “Because this people have transgressed my covenant that I commanded their fathers and have not obeyed my voice, I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died, in order to test Israel by them, whether they will take care to walk in the way of the LORD as their fathers did, or not.” So the LORD left those nations, not driving them out quickly, and he did not give them into the hand of Joshua.

English Standard Version (ESV)

What Judges 2:20-23 means

Following Joshua's death and the passing of his generation, Israel begins to stray from God's commands, worshipping local deities instead. This verse explains God's reaction, revealing His anger is kindled because they have broken the covenant He made with their ancestors and ignored His voice. The immediate aftermath sees God withholding His blessing and allowing foreign nations to oppress them as a consequence.

God's "Hot Anger"

The Bible doesn't shy away from describing God's anger. What does it mean when God's 'anger is hot' against His people?

When the Bible speaks of God's anger, it's not like human anger, which is often uncontrolled and driven by ego. Instead, God's anger is a righteous response to sin and rebellion. It's a holy displeasure that arises from His perfect nature and His unwavering commitment to justice and faithfulness.

In this verse, God's anger is described as 'hot.' Think of it like a fire that's about to ignite. This intense emotion is fueled by the people's betrayal of their covenant promises. It’s a sign that God takes His relationship with His people, and the commitments within that relationship, very seriously. This isn't a capricious or petty anger; it's a powerful, righteous reaction against covenant-breaking.

The Weight of Covenant Promises

Israel stood in a unique relationship with God, marked by a covenant. What happens when that sacred agreement is broken?

The covenant God made with Israel wasn't just a one-sided agreement; it was a profound commitment that defined their relationship and their identity. It laid out specific commands and expectations for how they were to live, especially in relation to God and the land He was giving them.

In Judges 2:20, the reason for God's anger is clear: 'Because this people have transgressed my covenant... and have not obeyed my voice.' This highlights a crucial truth: covenant demands faithfulness. When Israel broke the terms of the covenant, they weren't just disobeying rules; they were betraying the very foundation of their relationship with God. This betrayal had serious consequences, leading to His anger and the subsequent difficulties they faced.
