This verse highlights a subtle but crucial shift: they didn't just start worshipping other gods; they "abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt." This implies a betrayal of a deeply personal, historical relationship with God, not just a casual departure. It was this specific act of forsaking the One who had already delivered them that provoked God's anger.
And they abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed down to them. And they provoked the LORD to anger. They abandoned the LORD and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Following Joshua's death and the passing of the generation that witnessed the Exodus, Israel entered a period of grave spiritual decline. This new generation, lacking the direct experience of God's deliverance, began to embrace the idolatrous practices of the surrounding nations they were meant to conquer. This turning away from their covenant God, who had so powerfully rescued them from slavery, set the stage for the cycles of disobedience and divine discipline that characterize the Book of Judges.
Have you ever felt disconnected from your family's traditions or beliefs? Israel's turn from God felt like a profound betrayal, not just of God, but of their own heritage.
This verse hits hard because it's not just about abandoning God; it's about abandoning 'the God of their fathers.' This phrase points to a deep, relational history.
A Legacy of Deliverance
When we drift from the true God, what pulls us in? Israel found their attention captured by the popular trends of their neighbors.

The Danger of Syncretism
We often think of God's anger as a distant, abstract concept. But for Israel, it was a very real, personal consequence of their choices.
The final phrase, 'And they provoked the LORD to anger,' isn't just a dramatic ending; it describes the unavoidable outcome of their spiritual rebellion.
