Judges 2:10-13

What does Judges 2:10-13 mean?

This verse highlights a crucial, often overlooked, danger: knowledge of God isn't automatically passed down. Even if a generation experienced God's powerful acts firsthand, the next generation could grow up without that "experiential knowledge," becoming ignorant of Him and His deeds simply because they weren't personally taught and reminded.

And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers. And there arose another generation after them who did not know the LORD or the work that he had done for Israel. And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals. And they abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed down to them. And they provoked the LORD to anger. They abandoned the LORD and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth.

What Judges 2:10-13 means

This verse marks a critical turning point in the book of Judges. The generation that had witnessed Joshua lead them into the Promised Land and saw God's mighty acts was passing away. With their death, a new generation rose up that had no personal experience or deep understanding of the Lord and His powerful deeds for Israel, setting the stage for their slide into idolatry and disobedience.

The Cycle of Forgetfulness Begins

It's easy to think that great spiritual victories would last forever. But this verse reveals a sobering truth about how quickly people can forget.

The Generational Gap

This verse pinpoints a critical moment in Israel's history. Joshua, the great leader who led them into the Promised Land, dies. And with his death, a whole generation passes away. "And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers." This phrase, often used in the Old Testament, simply means they died and were buried.

But here's the stark reality: "there arose another generation after them who did not know the LORD or the work that he had done for Israel." This new generation didn't have the same lived experience of God's powerful interventions. They hadn't witnessed the parting of the Red Sea or the fall of Jericho firsthand. Because they lacked that deep, experiential knowledge, their connection to God began to fray.

More Than Just Intellectual Knowledge

What does it truly mean to 'know the LORD'? This verse suggests it's far more than just knowing facts about God.

Knowing God's Works, Not Just His Name

The phrase "knew not the LORD" here doesn't mean they were completely ignorant of God's existence. They lived in a nation where God was acknowledged, at least historically. The issue is a lack of deep, intimate, and functional knowledge.

It's about a knowledge that:

Engages the heart: It's not just intellectual assent but an "affectionate knowledge" (as Wesley puts it). It involves love, fear, and genuine worship.
