Manoah encounters a messenger from God, but his first instinct is to treat him like any other honored guest. What does this reveal about his perception?
When the angel of the Lord appears to Manoah and his wife, Manoah’s immediate response is one of hospitality. He says, 'Please let us detain you and prepare a young goat for you.'
A Guest, Not a God
Manoah clearly doesn't recognize the divine nature of his visitor. He thinks he's a man, possibly a prophet or a special messenger, someone worthy of a special meal. This is why he wants to prepare a 'kid,' a delicacy, as a sign of respect and gratitude.
The Ambiguity of Divine Encounters
This highlights a common theme in Scripture: the way God sometimes appears in human form, making it difficult for people to discern His true identity at first glance. Manoah's offer is the natural reaction of a man showing respect to a distinguished visitor, rather than worship to a divine being.
