Jephthah was an outcast, living in exile. Yet, when crisis struck, the people of Gilead turned to him. What does this tell us about their situation and their perception of Jephthah?
The people of Gilead found themselves in a dire situation. The Ammonites were making war against them, and they were without a military leader. Their assembly at Mizpeh revealed a significant gap in their ranks – no one had the skills or the courage to lead them into battle.
Recognizing Jephthah's reputation as a 'mighty man of valour,' despite his past (he was the son of a prostitute and had been driven out by his brothers), they sought him out. This wasn't a casual request; it was a desperate plea born out of necessity. They offered him the position of 'captain' or military commander, a specific role focused on leading their fight against the Ammonites.
