This seemingly simple statement is a deliberate narrative pivot. The phrase "in process of time" highlights that this wasn't immediate, but a significant period has passed since the Ammonites' initial oppression, allowing Jephthah to mature and gain renown before the renewed conflict. It signals a return to the main story after a historical aside, emphasizing that the stage is now set for Jephthah's pivotal role.
After a time the Ammonites made war against Israel. And when the Ammonites made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to bring Jephthah from the land of Tob. And they said to Jephthah, “Come and be our leader, that we may fight against the Ammonites.” But Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Did you not hate me and drive me out of my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?”
English Standard Version (ESV)
After years of oppression by the Ammonites, the people of Israel, now gathered and preparing for resistance, find themselves facing an outright invasion. This verse picks up the story right as active warfare begins, setting the stage for the elders of Gilead to seek out the exiled warrior Jephthah to lead them.
The Bible doesn't shy away from conflict. Sometimes, things escalate from quiet suffering to outright war. This verse marks that turning point.
The Shift to Hostilities
Judges 11:4 tells us, 'After a time the Ammonites made war against Israel.' This isn't the start of the Ammonite problem; it's a significant escalation.
For 18 years prior, Israel had been oppressed by the Ammonites (Judges 10:8), meaning they were under their heavy hand, likely paying tribute and suffering indignities. This verse signals that the oppression has now erupted into direct military conflict.
The Ammonites, who had previously exerted control, are now launching an invasion and engaging Israel in battle. This transition from passive suffering to active warfare is a critical moment, pushing Israel to a point where they must respond.
The phrase 'after a time' might seem ordinary, but it hints at a period of waiting, perhaps of growing tension, before conflict truly erupts.
The Weight of Waiting
The phrase 'after a time' (or 'in process of time') in Judges 11:4 is more than just a time marker. It implies a period where the previous state of affairs had continued, but perhaps tensions were simmering or preparations were being made.
This 'time' could represent:

This interlude highlights that significant changes, like the outbreak of war, rarely happen in a vacuum. There's often a preceding period, even if unstated, where conditions are ripening for what's to come.
