What's so striking here is that Israel doesn't demand passage as a right, but politely requests it with "Please, let us pass." This humble plea highlights their goal: reaching the land God promised them, not conquering Sihon's territory by force, showing that even in war, they sought peace first.
Israel then sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, king of Heshbon, and Israel said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land to our country,’ but Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory, so Sihon gathered all his people together and encamped at Jahaz and fought with Israel.
English Standard Version (ESV)
As Jephthah prepares to defend Israel against the Ammonites, he recounts past dealings with other nations to justify their presence in the land east of the Jordan River. He reminds them that Israel had peacefully requested passage through the territory ruled by Sihon, king of the Amorites, seeking to reach their God-given homeland. When Sihon refused and attacked, Israel was forced to fight for its survival and to claim the land that was now theirs.
Before any fighting began, Israel sent messengers with a simple request. What does this reveal about their approach to conquering the land?
Israel's journey to the Promised Land wasn't just a military campaign; it began with diplomacy. In Judges 11:19, we see them sending messengers to Sihon, the Amorite king, asking for peaceful passage through his territory. This mirrors their earlier approach in Numbers 21, where they specifically requested permission to travel.
This shows a deliberate strategy:
The verse mentions passing 'to our country.' What was this 'country,' and why is its description significant?
When Israel asked to pass through Sihon's land, they specified their destination was 'our country' (Judges 11:19). This refers to the land God had promised them, the land of Canaan. However, the territory they were seeking passage through was east of the Jordan River – land that would eventually be settled by the tribes of Reuben and Gad.
