Judges 10:7-9

What does Judges 10:7-9 mean?

What's striking here is that God's anger isn't just passive displeasure; it's an active force that sells Israel into slavery. This imagery highlights how deeply God grieves their choices and how their sin leads directly to their oppression, with enemies attacking from both the west and the east.

So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines and into the hand of the Ammonites, and they crushed and oppressed the people of Israel that year. For eighteen years they oppressed all the people of Israel who were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. And the Ammonites crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah and against Benjamin and against the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was severely distressed.

What Judges 10:7-9 means

Israel had once again fallen into deep idolatry, serving foreign gods and abandoning the LORD. This led to God's intense anger, resulting in Him delivering them into the oppressive hands of both the Philistines to the west and the Ammonites to the east, who then began to vex and subjugate them. This cycle of disobedience and subsequent oppression is a recurring theme throughout the book of Judges, highlighting the consequences of turning away from God.

God's Anger: More Than Just Emotion

We often think of God's anger as a purely emotional outburst. But when the Bible talks about God's anger, it means something far more profound.

When Scripture says "the anger of the LORD was hot" (or "kindled"), it's not just describing God losing His temper. It’s describing His righteous reaction to sin and rebellion.

A Holy Response

God is perfectly holy. Sin is the opposite of His nature – it’s a defiance of His goodness and order. His "anger" is His active, holy opposition to anything that corrupts, destroys, and rejects Him.

The Consequence of Sin

In Judges, Israel repeatedly turns away from God to worship other gods. This isn't a minor slip-up; it's a profound betrayal. "Selling" them into the hands of oppressors isn't God being cruel; it's Him allowing the natural, devastating consequences of their rejection of Him to take hold. It's the consequence of turning away from the Source of all protection and blessing.

Surrounded by Enemies: The Cost of Betrayal

Israel found itself attacked from both sides by powerful enemies. This wasn't random misfortune; it was a direct result of their spiritual infidelity.

The verse specifically mentions the Philistines and the Ammonites as Israel's oppressors. These weren't just any enemies; they were pagan nations whose gods Israel had begun to worship.
