Judges 10:6

What does Judges 10:6 mean?

This verse isn't just listing off a shopping spree of foreign gods; it highlights a chilling shift. For the first time in Israel's story, the text explicitly states they forsook the LORD, not just served other gods alongside Him, marking a total abandonment of their covenant. This wasn't just adding to their worship, but replacing it entirely.

The people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines. And they forsook the LORD and did not serve him.

English Standard Version (ESV)

What Judges 10:6 means

Following the leadership of judges like Tola and Jair, Israel had seemingly held off from their pattern of sin, but immediately after their deaths, the people plunge back into idolatry. This time, their wickedness escalates as they don't just worship the familiar Baals and Ashtaroths but also adopt the gods of all their surrounding nations—Syria, Sidon, Moab, Ammon, and the Philistines—completely forsaking the LORD. This widespread embrace of foreign deities sets the stage for a new period of oppression by these very nations.

More Than Just 'Doing Evil'

Have you ever noticed how a small wrong turn can lead you further and further off course? Israel's descent into idolatry wasn't a single event, but a process of 'adding to' their sins.

The text uses the phrase 'did evil again,' which isn't just a repeat offense, but an escalation. It implies they were piling on new sins to their old ones.

A Deeper Dive:

Compounding Wrongdoing: This wasn't just a slip-up; it was a pattern. They had already turned away from God, but now they were digging deeper into their disobedience. Think of it like a snowball rolling downhill, gathering more snow and momentum.
Incorporating New Idols: The list of gods – Baals, Ashtaroth, gods of Syria, Sidon, Moab, Ammon, and the Philistines – shows they weren't just dabbling. They were actively adopting the worship practices of every surrounding nation. This wasn't a minor cultural trend; it was a deliberate embrace of foreign, and therefore forbidden, deities.
Abandoning the Source: The core issue is stated plainly: 'they forsook the LORD and did not serve him.' This abandonment wasn't passive; it was an active rejection of their covenant relationship with God. They traded the Creator for the created.

The Allure of 'New' Gods

Why did Israel keep chasing after new gods? It wasn't just about rebellion; it was about seeking fulfillment in ways that seemed more appealing or powerful than faithfulness to the One True God.
