Why did the Israelites have to strike down the women and children of Ai too? The destruction of Ai wasn't just a military victory; it was a divine judgment.
The complete annihilation of Ai, including its non-combatant population, was a stark execution of God's judgment against Canaanite wickedness. This wasn't arbitrary violence but a consequence of the deep sin that permeated their society.
Divine Justice
God had tolerated the sins of the Canaanites for a long time, but their wickedness eventually reached a point where judgment was unavoidable. The Israelites were God's instrument in carrying out this sentence. As the text indicates, 'God, the righteous Judge, had sentenced the Canaanites for their wickedness; the Israelites only executed His doom.'
The Scope of Judgment
Deuteronomy 20:17 clearly states that the inhabitants of these nations were to be utterly destroyed. This included men, women, and children. While difficult for us to comprehend, this extreme measure served to remove the pervasive evil that would have corrupted Israel and led them away from God. It was a preventative measure for the spiritual health of God's chosen people.
