Achan tried to hide his sin, but it was quickly exposed. What does this incident reveal about God's knowledge and His justice?
Achan's attempt to conceal his sin was futile. The story powerfully illustrates that God sees everything, even what is hidden:
1. God's Unfailing Knowledge:
Even though Achan buried the stolen goods deep within his tent, God knew exactly where they were. The lots cast by Joshua confirmed what God already knew – that Achan was the guilty party.
2. The Inescapable Judgment:
While Achan's confession was prompted by exposure, it underlines that sin cannot be hidden from God's gaze. He is a God of justice who will not allow sin to go unaddressed, especially when it affects His covenant people.
3. The Purpose of Exposure:
Joshua's confrontation and Achan's confession weren't just about punishment; they were about restoring the community. By purging the 'accursed thing' from their midst, Israel could once again experience God's presence and favor, as seen in the subsequent mercy shown to them in the valley named Achor (meaning 'trouble').
4. Confrontation and Confession:
Joshua's gentle yet firm approach ('My son, give glory to the LORD...') encouraged confession. True repentance involves acknowledging the sin before God and the community, bringing it into the light.
