Joshua 7:1-12

What does Joshua 7:1-12 mean?

The verse explicitly states Achan took some of the devoted things, but the original Hebrew highlights this was a "breach of faith" or "treachery." This wasn't just accidental theft; it was a deliberate violation of trust with God, making the whole nation complicit in his betrayal until the sin was exposed.

But the people of Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things, for Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. And the anger of the LORD burned against the people of Israel. Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth-aven, east of Bethel, and said to them, “Go up and spy out the land.” And the men went up and spied out Ai. And they returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not have all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai. Do not make the whole people toil up there, for they are few.” So about three thousand men went up there from the people. And they fled before the men of Ai, and the men of Ai killed about thirty-six of their men and chased them before the gate as far as Shebarim and struck them at the descent. And the hearts of the people melted and became as water. Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the elders of Israel. And they put dust on their heads. And Joshua said, “Alas, O Lord GOD, why have you brought this people over the Jordan at all, to give us into the hands of the Amorites, to destroy us? Would that we had been content to dwell beyond the Jordan! O Lord, what can I say, when Israel has turned their backs before their enemies! For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it and will surround us and cut off our name from the earth. And what will you do for your great name?” The LORD said to Joshua, “Get up! Why have you fallen on your face? Israel has sinned; they have transgressed my covenant that I commanded them; they have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen and lied and put them among their own belongings. Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will be with you no more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you.

What Joshua 7:1-12 means

After the exhilarating victory and miraculous fall of Jericho, Israel immediately faces a devastating defeat at the smaller city of Ai. This stark reversal happens because one man, Achan, secretly takes forbidden plunder from Jericho, thus breaking God's command that everything from the city was "devoted" and belonged to God alone. The anger of the Lord then falls on all of Israel, not just Achan, leading to their shameful retreat.

The 'Devoted Things' and Divine Trust

Jericho was utterly destroyed, but a single act of theft turned a mighty victory into a devastating defeat. What made these 'devoted things' so dangerous?

The Bible calls the spoils of Jericho "devoted things" (or "accursed things"). This wasn't just ordinary loot; it was property completely set apart for God, to be destroyed or given to the tabernacle. Taking from these items was not merely stealing; it was a direct violation of God's command and a profound breach of trust.

A Sacred Ban: God had declared Jericho and its wealth completely "devoted" (or "banned"). This meant everything – people, animals, and possessions – was to be destroyed or reserved solely for God. No one was to take anything for themselves.
Breach of Faith: Achan's action was a betrayal of the covenant between Israel and God. It was like stealing from God's own treasury, showing a lack of faith in His provision and His authority.
Corporate Responsibility: Even though only Achan sinned, the text says "the people of Israel broke faith." This highlights how sin in one part of the community affects the whole, especially when that sin is hidden and the community fails to address it.

Achan's Sin: A Stain on the Whole Nation

One man's secret theft led to Israel's defeat and God's anger. How can one person's sin impact an entire community so severely?

The immediate consequence of Achan's sin was a devastating military defeat at Ai, and God's anger burning against all of Israel. This wasn't a random punishment; it stemmed from the nature of their covenant relationship with God.
