Joshua 6:4-6

What does Joshua 6:4-6 mean?

The text highlights not just the number seven, but the specific type of trumpet: "trumpets of jubilee" (Hebrew yobelim). These weren't ordinary war trumpets, but instruments associated with proclaiming freedom and special sacred times, subtly pointing to God's liberating power at work. This detail underscores that the victory wasn't about military might, but a divinely orchestrated release.

Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. On the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. And when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people shall go up, everyone straight before him.” So Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the LORD.”

What Joshua 6:4-6 means

God instructs Joshua and the Israelites on a highly unconventional method for conquering Jericho: marching around the city for six days, and then seven times on the seventh day, while priests blow trumpets. This ritual is deeply symbolic, emphasizing divine power over military might, especially after the miraculous crossing of the Jordan River. The repeated use of the number seven throughout the instructions highlights the sacredness and completeness of God's plan, signifying that victory belongs entirely to Him.

More Than Just Trumpets

Why rams' horns? Why seven of them? The instruments used at Jericho were not ordinary war horns, but carried a deeper meaning.

The Hebrew word translated as 'rams' horns' in Joshua 6:4 is actually closer to 'jubilee trumpets.' These weren't the straight trumpets used for military signals (like those in Numbers 10:2), but curved instruments, often made from horns, that were specifically associated with times of release, celebration, and divine proclamation—like the Jubilee year (Leviticus 25:9). Their use here signals that this victory wasn't just a military conquest, but a divine act of liberation and judgment. The ark of the covenant, representing God's presence, was at the center, with these special trumpets sounding before it. This wasn't about human strategy; it was about God's declared will and power making itself known through sacred sound.

The Divine Significance of Seven

Seven priests, seven trumpets, seven days, seven circuits. What's with all the sevens? It points to something far greater than a military tactic.

The repeated use of the number seven in the instructions for Jericho's fall is incredibly significant. Across ancient cultures, and especially in the Bible, 'seven' is the number of completeness, perfection, and divine work. Think of God resting on the seventh day, or the seven days of creation. In this context, the seven priests, seven trumpets, the seven days of marching, and especially the seven circuits on the seventh day, all underscore that this victory was entirely God's doing. It was a complete work of divine power, demonstrating His perfect plan and execution. By following these specific, seemingly strange instructions, Israel was demonstrating their complete trust and obedience in God, acknowledging that their success came not from their own might, but from His sacred, perfect intervention.
