Joshua 6:3-5

What does Joshua 6:3-5 mean?

This command to simply march around the city for six days, without any indication of actual combat, highlights that obedience isn't always about outward, visible action but often about a quiet, persistent trust in God's unseen power. It teaches us to look beyond what makes sense to our own logic and to find victory in God's prescribed, even seemingly absurd, methods.

You shall march around the city, all the men of war going around the city once. Thus shall you do for six days. Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. On the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. And when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people shall go up, everyone straight before him.”

What Joshua 6:3-5 means

After God's miraculous parting of the Jordan River, the Israelites are now at the formidable walls of Jericho, a city sealed shut against them. God reveals a highly unusual plan for its downfall: not with battering rams or siege engines, but with a silent, week-long march around the city. This strange ritual, involving armed men, priests blowing horns, and the Ark of the Covenant, is designed to test Israel's faith and demonstrate God's power, not human might.

Obedience Over Understanding

Marching around a city for six days sounds… odd. Why would God command something that seems so illogical?

God's ways aren't always our ways, and His methods can often seem strange to our human reasoning. The instructions for Jericho's fall were designed to push the Israelites beyond their own capabilities and understanding.

Faith in the Unseen

A Test of Trust: The command to march around Jericho for six days, doing the same thing each day, was a profound test. It wasn't about military strategy or brute force. It was about obedience to a divine command that, on the surface, seemed foolish.
Beyond Human Logic: The commentators point out that this seemingly absurd action was prescribed specifically so the Israelites would learn to rely on God's appointment and blessing, not their own strength or skill. It was a lesson that divine institutions shouldn't be judged by carnal reason.
God's Power Revealed: By using such unconventional means, God demonstrated His omnipotence. He can achieve victory through any method He chooses, even those that appear weak or insignificant to us.

The Symbolic Significance of the March

This wasn't just a walk in the park. This march was packed with meaning for both the Israelites and their enemies.
