Joshua 4:3-7

What does Joshua 4:3-7 mean?

This verse highlights that the stones weren't just random rocks; they were specifically chosen from where the priests’ feet stood firmly. This emphasizes that the memorial stones are rooted in the precise spot where God's presence, carried by the priests, held back the mighty Jordan. It’s a tangible reminder that God's power provides a solid foundation, even in the midst of overwhelming circumstances.

and command them, saying, ‘Take twelve stones from here out of the midst of the Jordan, from the very place where the priests’ feet stood firmly, and bring them over with you and lay them down in the place where you lodge tonight.’” Then Joshua called the twelve men from the people of Israel, whom he had appointed, a man from each tribe. And Joshua said to them, “Pass on before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of the Jordan, and take up each of you a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the people of Israel, that this may be a sign among you. When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do those stones mean to you?’ then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever.”

What Joshua 4:3-7 means

After the entire nation of Israel has safely crossed the Jordan River on dry ground, God instructs Joshua to have twelve men—one from each tribe—take twelve large stones from the riverbed where the priests stood. These stones are to be carried to the new campsite, which will later be known as Gilgal, to serve as a physical memorial. This act is intended to create a lasting reminder and a teaching tool for future generations about God's powerful intervention in bringing Israel into the Promised Land.

Pillars of Divine Power

Imagine standing in the dry bed of a mighty, raging river. What would you take with you to prove it happened?

God commanded Joshua to select twelve stones from the very spot where the priests’ feet had stood firm in the Jordan River. These weren't just any stones; they were to be taken from the heart of the miracle.

A Tangible Sign

This act was deeply symbolic. The stones represented God’s immense power to stop the natural flow of a river, just as He had parted the Red Sea for their ancestors. They were a physical, tangible sign of God’s faithfulness and might, meant to serve as a perpetual reminder.

A Unique Place

Taking stones from where the priests stood firm highlighted the critical role of obedience and faith. The priests, carrying the Ark of the Covenant, were the instruments through which God performed this wonder. Their stable position in the riverbed marked the precise point of God's intervention.

Generational Testimony and Teaching

How do we make sure future generations don't forget God's incredible deeds?

These twelve stones weren't just for the generation that crossed the Jordan; they were intended to provoke questions from their children and grandchildren.

A Catalyst for Storytelling

When future generations would ask, 'What do these stones mean?', parents would have a ready answer. This provided a vital opportunity to recount the story of God’s faithfulness in bringing Israel out of Egypt and leading them into the Promised Land.
