Imagine facing an overflowing river, a raging torrent that has swallowed its banks. Now, imagine that river stopping. Not just slowing down, but piling up like a solid wall. That's exactly what God did.
The Jordan River, especially during harvest season, was a formidable obstacle. It wasn't a gentle stream but a powerful, overflowing force that would have made crossing impossible by any natural means.
A Raging Flood
Verse 15 explicitly mentions that the Jordan 'overflows all its banks all the time of harvest.' This means the river was at its fullest and most dangerous, a chaotic expanse of water.
The Unnatural Stop
Yet, the text says in verse 16, 'the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap... and those that came down toward the sea... were completely cut off.' This wasn't a natural event. God Himself intervened, halting the flow of water and piling it up like a massive dam. This supernatural act served two purposes:
- Demonstration of Power: It showcased God's absolute authority over nature. He controls the very forces that seem unconquerable.
- Provision for His People: It created a dry path, making the impossible crossing a reality. God’s power is always put to work for the good of those who trust Him.
