Joshua emphasizes that not one promise has failed, a profound statement that underscores God's absolute faithfulness, even as he himself faces the universal human end of death. This isn't just about fulfilled blessings; it's a testament to God's character, showing He is utterly reliable in all His words, good and bad.
“And now I am about to go the way of all the earth, and you know in your hearts and souls, all of you, that not one word has failed of all the good things that the LORD your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Joshua is addressing the elders of Israel one last time, acknowledging his imminent death and the end of his leadership. He's just warned them sternly against intermarrying with the remaining nations and serving their gods, which he declared would be a snare and destruction for them. Now, he points to God's faithfulness in fulfilling every promise made to Israel concerning their inheritance of the land, as a testament to God's character.
Joshua stands at the end of his life, ready to depart. He uses a phrase we still understand today to describe this inevitable journey.
Joshua announces his imminent death using the phrase, "going the way of all the earth." This isn't just a poetic expression; it's a profound acknowledgment of mortality. It means he's heading towards the grave, a path every single human being must eventually walk. Even leaders as significant as Joshua, chosen by God and instrumental in His plans, are subject to this universal human experience. He uses this shared reality to emphasize the weight and importance of his final words to the people.
Joshua doesn't just speak of his own departure; he boldly testifies to the absolute faithfulness of God's Word.
The core of Joshua's message is an unshakeable declaration: not one word of God's good promises to Israel has failed. He appeals to their own hearts and souls, their direct experience, as undeniable proof. From bringing them into the promised land to driving out their enemies, every promise God made has been fulfilled. This isn't a matter of opinion or interpretation; it's a historical fact they lived. Joshua emphasizes this faithfulness to build their confidence in God's character and His future dealings, even as he departs.
