Ever wonder if there's more to where things fall into place? In Joshua's time, even the assignment of cities wasn't left to chance.
The Sacred Lottery
The distribution of cities to the Levites, and specifically to the priestly line of Aaron, was determined by lot. This wasn't a game of chance, but a sacred method to ensure God's direct involvement and the fairness of the division. As the text says, 'the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites.' This divine appointment guaranteed that each portion was exactly as God intended.
Strategic Placement
Notice where these thirteen cities for the priests were located: out of the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin. This wasn't accidental. These tribes bordered Jerusalem, the future site of the Temple. Commentators highlight that this placement ensured the priests were always close to the central place of worship. It reflects God's foresight, preparing the way for worship and service long before the Temple was built.
