Why did the Levites not receive land like the other tribes? It wasn't an oversight; it was a divine appointment.
In Joshua 18:7, we see a clear distinction made for the tribe of Levi. Unlike the other tribes who were to receive a physical land inheritance in Canaan, the Levites were set apart for a special purpose.
The Priesthood's Heritage
Moses had declared in Numbers 18:20, 'The LORD is your portion and your inheritance among the people of Israel.' This meant their 'inheritance' wasn't acres of land, but the sacred duties and privileges of serving the Lord as priests and Levites. This included a portion of the tithes, offerings, and sacrifices brought by the other tribes. Their role was central to Israel's spiritual life, and their provision was directly tied to God's presence and the worship of His people.
